Bubble Diagram

After finishing the boards for my inspiration, I got rollin on the bubble diagram. This took me alot longer than normal. I think possibly because there are so many things to incorporate into the building and its hard to plan all the spaces, and even what spaces i need, without a guideline to go by. i got the bubble diagram for the main building done. I decided to keep the lobby, spa and restaurant in the original building and leave the hotel itself for the lot next to it. Hopefully that will work out well, i dont really know how the walkway between the hotel will work out. I'll have to do some more research on that.

Bubble Diagram (really proud of my retro circles by the way!!):

NEW IDEAS!!

Finally, I have figured out which direction I would like to go in. Unfortunately, I feel like im back at square one. I have decided to go with a Classic 50's theme:

-the restaurant: more like a modern 50's diner, named "Vette City Lounge", using reds, oranges, and yellow to match the brick exterior (and interior walls).

-the hotel: a classy 50's style, incorporating art deco elements and modern textiles to enhance the atmosphere of the hotel lobby and hotel rooms themselves. Named "Starlite Hotel". The colors for the hotel are relaxing blues and greens.

-the spa: named "Atomic Betty's" this will convey the feeling of a typical 50's style salon. light pinks and greens are to be incorporated and hopefully i'll be able to find some funky furniture and spa fixtures to use.

Overall, i feel like i have a direction to go in, names for the different sections of the building and lots of searching for 50's style elements ahead!

I'm excited! :)

Critiques

Today we critiqued each others work in class. Everyone had really great ideas and concepts. I still feel like mine is kinda out there in left field. I am not too happy with it. Not that i dont like the inspiration that i have but i still dont have a name, or a strong concept of design. Today was helpful though, i realized that I need to get my brain cranking on this issue and get something set in stone.

Snow Day!!

Today was a snow day.. I was a little productive. I am still working on the direction I am going with this project. Right now I am still looking for inspiration. Originally i wanted to go with a streamline design, then it went towards a more futuristic design incorporating modern elements and classic styles. Then to art deco. I am lost in a midst of ideas and things i love, but at the same time, i still have no set direction.

Critiques are monday so i'll be working on things to show this weekend and hopefully come up with something i like.

Visiting Galloway Place

Today we visited the site. It turned out to be alot more spacious that I realized. Being in the actual building did help me decide how i wanted to orient the hotel lobby, restaurant and where I want the spa to be. I plan to use the garage doors in the middle of the long wall as the main entrance to the lobby. Also, i noticed in the ceiling that there is a dip in the middle, could possibly be used for a boundary line. I want the bar to be to the right of the entrance and the spa to be to the back right. I would like to somehow incorporate the existing brick walls that are inside the building but it depends on how i can fit the spa furnishings into the plan. I also would like to utilize and improve the existing skylights, they add lots of interest to the ceiling.

Here are some pictures(dont mind the date on the pictures, my camera is retarded):

Cool Ceilings

Goals for Today

PROJECT:
- Your design must be a mixed use facility that will include a hotel, restaurant and spa.

Client:

Downtown Redevelopment Association

Main Street
Bowling Green, Kentucky

Property:

Galloway Motors
601 State Street
Bowling Green, Kentucky

Description of Property:

The structure is a Streamline Moderne style commercial building built ca. 1949. Built as Galloway Motor Co. and later home to Quick Lincoln Mercury, the property was purchased by the city of Bowling Green in 2003 and deeded to the DRA for use as its headquarters. The property is considered a cornerstone of Circus Square, the one block park planned to go between State and College streets and Sixth and Seventh avenues. The area became associated with the local automobile culture as a result of Frank and Henry Galloway moving their car and farm equipment dealerships from Fountain Square.

- As an honors student i am also required to do a capstone/thesis project. I plan to create the 44 page booklet as well as a research paper entitled:

Preserving historical buildings in downtown Bowling Green and the impact preservation has on the community and it’s heritage.

Last class as well as over the weekend i did a bit of research and found some inspirational photos. Since i am writing my paper on preserving historical buildings, i've decided that i want to go with a streamline moderne style design that incorporates classic elements of this period. For example, lots of chrome, curved lines, simplistic design with a small bit of ornament. I'd also like to incorporate fun, bright colors that will draw in a younger crowd as well as those who enjoy the streamline design.

Goals For today:
  • Listings of everything i need to include in each area
  • Possible bubble diagram
  • Find Font/Booklet Page labeling
  • Come up with a name for the hotel and areas of the hotel (restaurant , spa, possible bar area by lounge? Research Hotel names from the 30's-40's
  • Find color scheme (bright, funky, classic, exciting?)

I also NEED to do these things ASAP:
  • Honors Augmentation contract - print and get signed by the 5th?
  • Get everything off blackboard by the 8th from old classes.
  • Get thesis defense proposal signed asap

yay for being a senior and having way too much to do in the second week of school!

Back to the Beatle, Joe Walsh and Jimi to get me through the long day ahead of me...
